Producer: The Royal Tokaji Wine Company. The winery has created a limited-edition magnum of its 2008 Essencia.

The 2009 Tokaji Essencia comes in 1,386 individual red lacquer hand-crafted boxes containing a 375ml bottle and an obligatory hand-blown glass spoon, which is not there for decorative purposes. It does enhance imbibement, allowing that enormous hit of sucrosity to land straight on the tongue instead of clinging to the sides of your mouth or gums. It has a surprisingly bashful nose for the first 12 hours.

Vineyard notes: "The majority of Royal Tokaji’s vineyards are in the Mád commune. These include the First Growths – Szt. Tamás, Nyulászó, Betsek, and the Second Growth Birsalmás. Royal Tokaji’s Mézes Mály vineyard – a Great First Growth – lies within the Tarcal commune. At the end of the 17th century, Tokaji aszú wines were so well regarded throughout the Courts of Europe that Prince Rákóczi insisted on a classification of the finest vineyards around the 28 villages in the region into: Great First Growths, First Growths, Second Growths and Third Growths. For over 300 years this special terroir has benefited from Botrytis to produce world class wines."

Producer Notes: Essencia is the world’s most concentrated essence of its ripest grapes. Essencia is the liquid gold that very slowly oozes from a pile of aszú grapes raisined by botrytis.
